Writing 39B
Fairy tales

Hello! My name is Nathan Wu and I am a First Year Computer Science student at UC Irvine. When I am not studying, there are many things that I enjoy doing in my free time, including watching/playing basketball, listening to music, and watching shows. I have a brown belt in Karate and am a proud Eagle Scout.
I am creating this e-portfolio for a writing class in UCI called Writing 39B. Some of the course objectives are the following:
-
understanding the concept of rhetoric and rhetoric situation
-
understanding a text through the rhetoric situation at the time of its writing
-
practice collaborating with others and learning how to be efficient in collaboration
-
understanding the importance of reflection in the learning process
-
improving in the "habits of mind", which include curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, persistence, responsibility, flexibility, and metacognition

In fact, I have a whole section of my site that is dedicated to reflecting on what I learned each week and how I improved in a "habits of mind." That would be my BLOG. Click HERE to read my blogs!

In class, we had to work with group members and give a presentation of a topic we were assigned. Click below for an example.
Cross Cultural Tales: The Strong Boy

Charles Perrault laid the foundations for the fairy tale genre and is known for his 17th century French folk/fairy tales.
The Grimms Brothers spent a majority of their lives collecting German tales, in the hopes that they would help create a unified German cultural identity in the 19th century.
Here are some pictures that are reflective of some things I have learned in the course!

Little did I know that the original versions of many tales were not intended for children. For example, in the original version of "Rapunzel," she asked why her dress was getting tight around her waist, indicating pregnancy.

In Perrault's "Little Red Riding Hood", the wolf tells Little Red to get into bed with him! Not knowing it was the wolf, she takes off her clothes and gets into bed!

"The Frog King" is a tale that my group our RIP Video Project on. In here, we learn that not all princesses are nice!

"The Sleeping Beauty" is a tale that exists in more than one culture. In a variation named, "Sun, Moon, and Talia," by Giambattista Basile, the king has sexual intercourse with Talia while she was asleep and under a spell! That was shocking!
The Sleeper and the Spindle is a modern fairy tale that incorporates elements from both "The Sleeping Beauty" and "Snow White." In the original tale, Snow White is very gullible and was always put in a position in which she needed saving. However, in The Sleeper and the Spindle, Snow White is a smart and independent woman who plays the hero. This is very different from tales from the 17th-19th century, which often portrayed women as weak and needing to be rescued by male heroes.
